The Office of the DeKalb County Solicitor-General, led by Sherry Boston, prosecutes criminal misdemeanor offenses filed in the State Court of DeKalb County.  These crimes generally include domestic violence, elder abuse, cruelty to children, vehicular homicide, drunk driving, stalking and harassment, trespassing, and animal cruelty.  Most misdemeanors carry a maximum fine of 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine.  The Solicitor-General’s Office handles more than 12,000 cases annually and consists of a staff of attorneys, investigators, victim-witness advocates, community prosecutor, legal secretaries, and public information officer.  The Office prides itself on the professional and impartial prosecution of crimes while working closely with police and members of the community to develop strategies to prevent crimes before they occur.

Internships
The Solicitor-General’s Office offers unpaid internship opportunities to high school, college, and law students. Internships are 8-12 weeks long and require 20-40 hours of work each week. All applicants must abide by the Office’s confidentiality policy and be willing to submit to a criminal background and driving record check.  The Office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.  Availability is limited, competitive, and is based on the criteria outlined below:

High School Students:
A limited number of summer internships are available for seniors who have a strong interest in learning about the law.  Interns must be willing to perform clerical duties and have good communication skills. College Students: 
Ideal candidates are interested in a career in law enforcement and, particularly, the court system. All majors are welcome to apply but the internship will be most suited for criminal justice, social work or psychology majors.  Interns will work in the Special Victims Unit, help in the records room, attend court, assist with the victim survey process, and, possibly shadow and assist victim advocates.  Candidates must be self-starters, willing to perform clerical duties and have good communication skills.  Qualified students should send their resume and a short essay explaining their interest in public interest law.  Students who send these materials will be contacted for an interview. Law Students: 
Interns will assist attorneys in drawing accusations, and handling pleas, hearings, and motions in Court.  Interns will help prepare cases for trial and handle bench and jury trials.  Candidates must have a strong interest in criminal law; and must be self-starters who can communicate effectively.  Ideal candidates will have taken criminal and constitutional law, evidence and criminal procedure.  Most internship opportunities will be under the Third Year Practice Act, but in limited circumstances or for special projects a rising 2L may be considered.  Candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, and law school transcript.  References and writing samples are also welcome.
